Our Butcherbird Project in WA hosts Australia’s largest onshore manganese resource, comprising large tonnages of near-surface manganese oxide ore in seven deposits. In January 2024, we released a Feasibility Study (FS) on the proposed expansion of Butcherbird to 

 of manganese oxide concentrate which demonstrated robust economic returns and rapid capital payback.


Following the release of the FS, the project team has commenced detailed design, planning and procurement for the Butcherbird Expansion Project. This is being undertaken in parallel with project financing and permitting activities to underpin a smooth and efficient project delivery.

The new processing plant will be larger, more efficient and designed using the operational learnings from the pilot plant that has successfully delivered significant tonnages of high-quality manganese concentrate to our customers since commencement in 2021.

Expansion of the Butcherbird processing facility is also an important step in providing feedstock for our planned battery-grade HPMSM project to be built in Louisiana, USA in partnership with General Motors LLC and Stellantis NV.

Simple geology and extremely low levels of contaminants

Environmentally benign mining - no explosives, wastewater or chemicals.

Butcherbird’s geology is simple, which simplifies our mining operations. The ore zone at Yanneri Ridge is at the surface, dips shallowly to the north, resulting in a very low strip ratio estimated at 0.2:1. 

The uniform grade distribution means that the entire ore zone is mined for processing with no need for grade control or selectivity.

The large resource has the potential to underpin a very long-life mine producing ethically sourced, low-carbon manganese for both traditional and new energy markets.

An infill drilling programme has just been completed to convert inferred resources to indicated to support a recalculation of the current reserve.
